Dry mouth and diabetes / mulut kering dan diabetes

One of the most common oral health problems for diabetics is dry mouth or altered salivary flow (or xerostomia). The saliva has several functions. It prevents infection by controlling bacteria in the mouth. It moistens and cleanses the mouth by neutralizing acids produced by dental plaque, and it washes away the dead skin cells that accumulate on the gums, tongue and cheeks. It helps with the digestion, making it possible to chew, taste and swallow food.

An obvious sign of dry mouth is having a lack of moisture in your mouth. Some common signs that dry mouth may be present are, a lack of moisture in the mouth, irritation at the corners of the mouth, inflammation of the gums (gingivitis), yeast infections (thrush) on the tongue, cheeks and palate.

Consistently high blood sugar levels is a common reason for dry mouth in people with diabetes. Other causes may be related to not keeping yourself hydrated well enough, smoking or it could be a side effect of a particular medication you are taking.There are over 500 prescription and nonprescription medications that have been found to cause dry mouth. Medications that treat high blood pressure or other heart problems are used by many patients to manage complications of diabetes. Other drug groups that cause dry mouth are those used for depression, anxiety and allergies, as well as diuretics, anti-psychotics, muscle relaxants, sedatives and anti-inflammatory medications.

How to treat and reduce the effect of dry mouth ? 

  • Clean your teeth after each meal and before bed
  • Keep yourself hydrated and carry water with you
  • Use a non-alcoholic mouthwash
  • Use of lip balm is recommended if you have dry or irritated lips (particularly at the corners)
  • Where possible, keep your blood sugars within the recommended range

Salah satu masalh yang terjadi karena diabetes adalah mulut kering atau penurunan aliran air ludah (atau xerostomia). Air ludah memiliki beberapa fungsi, yaitu : mencegah infeksi dengan cara mengontrol bakteri dalam mulut, membasahi dan membersihkan mulut dengan menetralkan pH mulut, dan membersihkan gusi, lidah dan rongga mulut dari sel-sel mati, membantu pencernaan makanan dengan cara membuat makanan menjadi lebih gampang untuk ditelan.

Salah satu tanda mulut kering adalah kurangnya cairan dalam mulut sehingga mengiritasi sudut mulut, inflamasi gusi dan infeksi jamur pada lidah dan juga rongga mulut.

Kadar gula yang selalu tinggi adalah penyebab utama dari mulut kering pada penderita diabetes. Penyebab lain yang dapat menyebabkan mulut kering adalah kurang minum air, merokok dan efek samping dari obat-obatan. 500 macam obat dapat menyebabkan mulut kering.  Beberapa macam obat yang dapat menyebabkan mulut kering seperti misalnya obat-obat yang dipakai untuk pengobatan depresi, alergi dan anti-radang.

Bagaimana mencegah mulut kering pada penderita diabetes?

  • Membersihkan gigi setelah makan dan sebelum tidur
  • Minum lebih banyak air
  • Gunakan obat kumur yang tidak mengandung alkohol
  • Gunakan pelembab bibir untuk menghindari bibir kering dan iritasi pada sudut bibir
  • Jaga kadar gula darah sesuai standar.
